A TASTE OF HUNGER

We are pleased to announce that TrustNordisk has boarded sales for critically acclaimed director Christoffer Boe’s star-studded Danish feature A TASTE OF HUNGER; a romantic drama about a couple who sacrifices everything to achieve the highest possible praise within the culinary world – the Michelin star. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal star in the lead roles.

Director Christoffer Boe is one of the heavyweights in Danish film, having directed a wide range of both critically acclaimed films, including RECONSTRUCTION (2003) which won the Golden Camera and Prix Regards Jeune at Cannes Film Festival, and box office hits such as THE PURITY OF VENGEANCE (2018). The latter was produced by Louise Vesth (MELANCHOLIA, 2011; NYMPHOMANIAC, 2013); the only producer in Denmark to have produced five Danish features within this decade, all selling more than 700,000 tickets locally. Now, Boe and Vesth have teamed up once again for A TASTE OF HUNGER.

Boe has co-written the script with director and screenwriter Tobias Lindholm, who has directed several episodes of Netflix’s critically acclaimed drama series MINDHUNTER (2017) and written the scripts for many of Thomas Vinterberg’s latest features, including THE HUNT (2012) and the upcoming ANOTHER ROUND (2020).

In the roles as the ambitious and insatiable couple Carsten and Maggi, the audience can look forward to two of Denmark’s most highly acclaimed actors Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal. Coster-Waldau, perhaps most famously known for his role as Jaime Lannister in HBO’s worldwide hit-series GAME OF THRONES (2011-2019) and features such as BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001), OBLIVION (2013) and GODS OF EGYPT (2016), plays the passionate celebrity chef Carsten. Greis-Rosenthal, who had her breakthrough as the female lead in Bille August’s latest feature A FORTUNATE MAN (2018), for which she won several awards, plays his business partner and wife Maggi.

Synopsis:

Welcome to PURI, the bright new star on the culinary sky in Denmark. Here, the couple Maggi and Carsten rule. She is an anthropologist with a specialty in meals, and has created the extraordinary setting of the restaurant. He is a celebrity chef who works his magic in the kitchen. Together, they form the latest invincible duo on the Danish gourmet scene. They love each other, have two wonderful children and own one of the most hyped food temples in Copenhagen. They want it all and they have it all. Almost. The prestigious Michelin-star is yet to be secured and the couple is willing to sacrifice everything to achieve their dream. In their tireless chase after the ultimate recognition, they forget that the best meals in life are shared together.

A TASTE OF HUNGER is produced by Louise Vesth for Zentropa and co-produced by Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst with support from the Danish Film Institute, Svenska Filminstitutet and Nordisk Film & TV Fond, in collaboration with TV 2 Danmark and SVT with development support from The Creative Europe Programme – Media of The European Union.

First still from Thomas Vinterberg’s ANOTHER ROUND

Zentropa has released the first still photo from Thomas Vinterberg’s next feature film, ANOTHER ROUND.

Apart from the still, Zentropa and sales agents TrustNordisk announce that the film has been sold to more than 30 territories worldwide.

With this new highly anticipated modern drama, Vinterberg re-unites a major part of his team from the heartrending drama THE HUNT (2012), which took the world audience by storm and was nominated for a Golden Globe®, an Academy Award® and the Cannes Palme d’Or.

Vinterberg’s reunion includes fellow Academy Award®-nominee scriptwriter Tobias Lindholm as well as internationally acclaimed actor Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen and Lars Ranthe, who will play the leading roles together with Magnus Millang, who has also featured in Vinterberg’s previous dramas.

The film is currently in editing and is expected to have its local theatrical release in Denmark in autumn 2020.

Synopsis

There’s a theory that we should be born with a share of alcohol in our blood. That modest intoxication opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all tired high school teachers, embark on an experiment to uphold a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students?

Initial results are positive, and the teachers’ little project is elevated to a genuine academic study gathering results. Both their classes and their results continue to improve, and the group feels alive again! As the units are knocked back, the experiment progresses for some and derails for others. It grows increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences.

This is the 10th time Lars von Trier is in Official Selection at Cannes Film Festival. In 2000 he won The Palme d’Or for DANCER IN THE DARK and following of his other works have been selected for and have won awards in Main Competition at the festival: THE ELEMENT OF CRIME (1984); EUROPA (1991); BREAKING THE WAVES (1996); THE IDIOTS (1998); DOGVILLE (2003); MANDERLAY (2005); ANTICHRIST (2009); MELANCHOLIA (2011).

The cast of THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT consists of Matt Dillon (WAYWARD PINES, 2016; CRASH, 2004) as Jack, Bruno Ganz (DOWNFALL, 2004) as Verge and Uma Thurman (NYMPHOMANIAC, 2013; PULP FICTION, 1995), Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience, 2016; Mad Max: Fury Road, 2015), Siobhan Fallon Hogan (DANCER IN THE DARK, 2000; DOGVILLE, 2003) and Sofie Gråbøl (THE DAY WILL COME, 2016; THE KILLING, 2012) will appear as some of the unfortunate women who encounter Jack along his way.

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT takes place in 1970s USA. We follow the highly intelligent Jack through 5 incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view. He views each murder as an artwork in itself, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite the fact that the final and inevitable police intervention is drawing ever near (which both provokes and puts pressure on Jack) he is – contrary to all logic – set on taking greater and greater chances.

Along the way we experience Jack’s descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge – a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of, for Jack, dangerous and difficult manoeuvres.

The film has been sold to the U.S. (IFC), UK and Ireland (Curzon Artificial Eye), Germany, Austria (Telemünchen), France (Films Du Losanges), Spain (Golem), Latin America (California Filmes), Italy (Videa), Benelux (September film), Greece (Seven Films), Portugal (Leopardo filmes), Israel (Shani Film), Middle East (Falcon Films), China (DD Dream), Hong Kong (Sundream), South Korea (Atnine Film), Russia/CIS (Russian World Vision), Poland (Gutek), Hungary (Vertigo Media), Taiwan (Moviecloud), Former Yugoslavia (Cinemania group), Czech Republic (Aero film), Bulgaria (Euro Films), Former Yugoslavia (Cinemania), Romania (Independenta Film 97) and Baltic States (Estin Film).

Letter to collaborative partners

Dear Collaborative Partner,

As the current management at Zentropa we would like to provide you with a status of our initiatives following the serious allegations, which in the course of the past few days have been directed at Peter Aalbæk Jensen and Zentropa’s company culture.

We are deeply affected and moved by these cases and very sorry that there are people who have felt violated or harassed while they have been in the company’s employment. Based on the knowledge we now have, and the new light our culture has been placed in, we have launched a series of initiatives.

We will invite the working environment authorities to carry out an investigation of our workplace in order to get a professional evaluation of our place of work and insight into possible areas of improvement.

Monday morning we had a meeting with our employees with regards to staring a process, which will go though, update, hone and specify our guidelines for a sound and healthy working environment. Monday Nov. 20th this process will be concluded. Thereafter, management will produce a set of valid guidelines that will be implemented with immediate effect.

All employees will be required to abide by these guidelines and within 6 months management will formulate a written follow-up and carry out employee satisfaction surveys.

Since 2008 Zentropa has carried out anonymous workplace evaluations. These evaluations have never implied that there were any significant problems with the physical or psychological work environment and the problems, which have arisen, have been dealt with in collaboration with the employees. Moving forward we will be sharpening our focus on the workplace surveys and encourage all our employees to utilize this opportunity to express themselves and stress that we welcome any and all concerns no matter how large or small they may be.

In addition, management has made the following decisions regarding Peter Aalbæk Jensen effective immediately:

  • In the future Peter has no influence on the daily leadership of the company. He will not partake in any management

meetings.

  • Peter has no influence on our trainee program and is no longer authorised to have trainees under his administration.
  • As of today Peter is no longer allowed to speak on behalf of Zentropa.

We have all been employed at Zentropa during the time where these experienced violations and harassments have taken place. Therefore, we assume co-responsibility for those events, which the employees have experienced as offensive or violating. We would like to contribute to creating a workspace that is safe and builds on a sound culture, where it is appreciated that our attention is drawn to any failure to thrive.

At the same time we whish also to draw attention to the fact that we have all been a part of the old culture, while it was in effect but we have not perceived it as being neither violating, harassing nor systematic. Nevertheless, with the knowledge we have today and in the light that the whole world is currently shedding on these issues, it has become clear that it was not a good culture for everyone and therefore, it must be changed.

Zentropa’s culture should be changed into something that is better for everyone and it is crucial that we now solve these problems with dialogue and an open state of mind so that we may rebuild the fundamental trust between people, which is so essential to people’s everyday well being. Now that we have all grown wiser, everyone should get a fair chance to improve him or herself.

Many kind regards,

Anders Kjærhauge, Rikke Ennis, Sisse Graum Jørgensen, Louise Vesth
