Domestic record for The Purity of Vengeance!

The fourth and last Department Q-film is now the highest grossing domestic film in Danish cinemas ever.

Merely a month and a half has passed since the premiere of Zentropa’s irrevocable last Department Q-feature THE PURITY OF VENGEANCE, directed by Christoffer Boe. The film has performed historically well in the Danish cinemas, and today Zentropa and Nordisk Film Distribution announced that the film has set the record as the highest grossing domestic film in Danish cinemas to this date. Until last night the film has had a turnover of DKK 72.5 M, thereby surpassing the previous record holder –the second installment in Zentropa’s Department Q-quadrilogy, The Absent One – which reached a turnover of DKK 68.1 M.

The Purity of Vengeance among the most successful films in Danish cinemas ever

With a turnover of DKK 72.5 M The Purity of Vengeance is also among the most successful films in Danish cinemas ever, even including international blockbusters. The Purity of Vengeance is found in 11th place, only surpassed by blockbusters such as Avatar, Titanic, the The Lord of the Rings franchise, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and two James Bond titles.

Great joy at Zentropa

Zentropa is obviously very excited for the new record. Producer Louise Vesth, who has now produced the domestically top five grossing Danish films, says:

“It’s a wonderful record. We wanted to end the Department Q franchise on the top, and it’s fantastic that the film has been so well received by its audience, and has now secured a spot in the history of Danish cinema until this record will be beaten sometime in the future. The film will continue to run in cinemas well into 2019, so we’re not even done yet. We’re lucky to have talented scriptwriters, directors, and actors able to reach this level”.

As an additional note, The Purity of Vengeance has sold more than 730.384 tickets.

The Purity of Vengeance is expected continue playing in Danish cinemas until at least January 2019.

This is the 10th time Lars von Trier is in Official Selection at Cannes Film Festival. In 2000 he won The Palme d’Or for DANCER IN THE DARK and following of his other works have been selected for and have won awards in Main Competition at the festival: THE ELEMENT OF CRIME (1984); EUROPA (1991); BREAKING THE WAVES (1996); THE IDIOTS (1998); DOGVILLE (2003); MANDERLAY (2005); ANTICHRIST (2009); MELANCHOLIA (2011).

The cast of THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT consists of Matt Dillon (WAYWARD PINES, 2016; CRASH, 2004) as Jack, Bruno Ganz (DOWNFALL, 2004) as Verge and Uma Thurman (NYMPHOMANIAC, 2013; PULP FICTION, 1995), Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience, 2016; Mad Max: Fury Road, 2015), Siobhan Fallon Hogan (DANCER IN THE DARK, 2000; DOGVILLE, 2003) and Sofie Gråbøl (THE DAY WILL COME, 2016; THE KILLING, 2012) will appear as some of the unfortunate women who encounter Jack along his way.

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT takes place in 1970s USA. We follow the highly intelligent Jack through 5 incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view. He views each murder as an artwork in itself, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite the fact that the final and inevitable police intervention is drawing ever near (which both provokes and puts pressure on Jack) he is – contrary to all logic – set on taking greater and greater chances.

Along the way we experience Jack’s descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge – a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of, for Jack, dangerous and difficult manoeuvres.

The film has been sold to the U.S. (IFC), UK and Ireland (Curzon Artificial Eye), Germany, Austria (Telemünchen), France (Films Du Losanges), Spain (Golem), Latin America (California Filmes), Italy (Videa), Benelux (September film), Greece (Seven Films), Portugal (Leopardo filmes), Israel (Shani Film), Middle East (Falcon Films), China (DD Dream), Hong Kong (Sundream), South Korea (Atnine Film), Russia/CIS (Russian World Vision), Poland (Gutek), Hungary (Vertigo Media), Taiwan (Moviecloud), Former Yugoslavia (Cinemania group), Czech Republic (Aero film), Bulgaria (Euro Films), Former Yugoslavia (Cinemania), Romania (Independenta Film 97) and Baltic States (Estin Film).

Letter to collaborative partners

Dear Collaborative Partner,

As the current management at Zentropa we would like to provide you with a status of our initiatives following the serious allegations, which in the course of the past few days have been directed at Peter Aalbæk Jensen and Zentropa’s company culture.

We are deeply affected and moved by these cases and very sorry that there are people who have felt violated or harassed while they have been in the company’s employment. Based on the knowledge we now have, and the new light our culture has been placed in, we have launched a series of initiatives.

We will invite the working environment authorities to carry out an investigation of our workplace in order to get a professional evaluation of our place of work and insight into possible areas of improvement.

Monday morning we had a meeting with our employees with regards to staring a process, which will go though, update, hone and specify our guidelines for a sound and healthy working environment. Monday Nov. 20th this process will be concluded. Thereafter, management will produce a set of valid guidelines that will be implemented with immediate effect.

All employees will be required to abide by these guidelines and within 6 months management will formulate a written follow-up and carry out employee satisfaction surveys.

Since 2008 Zentropa has carried out anonymous workplace evaluations. These evaluations have never implied that there were any significant problems with the physical or psychological work environment and the problems, which have arisen, have been dealt with in collaboration with the employees. Moving forward we will be sharpening our focus on the workplace surveys and encourage all our employees to utilize this opportunity to express themselves and stress that we welcome any and all concerns no matter how large or small they may be.

In addition, management has made the following decisions regarding Peter Aalbæk Jensen effective immediately:

  • In the future Peter has no influence on the daily leadership of the company. He will not partake in any management

meetings.

  • Peter has no influence on our trainee program and is no longer authorised to have trainees under his administration.
  • As of today Peter is no longer allowed to speak on behalf of Zentropa.

We have all been employed at Zentropa during the time where these experienced violations and harassments have taken place. Therefore, we assume co-responsibility for those events, which the employees have experienced as offensive or violating. We would like to contribute to creating a workspace that is safe and builds on a sound culture, where it is appreciated that our attention is drawn to any failure to thrive.

At the same time we whish also to draw attention to the fact that we have all been a part of the old culture, while it was in effect but we have not perceived it as being neither violating, harassing nor systematic. Nevertheless, with the knowledge we have today and in the light that the whole world is currently shedding on these issues, it has become clear that it was not a good culture for everyone and therefore, it must be changed.

Zentropa’s culture should be changed into something that is better for everyone and it is crucial that we now solve these problems with dialogue and an open state of mind so that we may rebuild the fundamental trust between people, which is so essential to people’s everyday well being. Now that we have all grown wiser, everyone should get a fair chance to improve him or herself.

Many kind regards,

Anders Kjærhauge, Rikke Ennis, Sisse Graum Jørgensen, Louise Vesth
